Winemaker Notes
The 2015 vintage at Nine One Six felt a bit like a renaissance in many ways. Moving through the various emotions of missing the 2014 vintage, 2015 offered a sense of rejuvenation and promise; the tranquility of 2014 had allowed the vines to “rest and reset”, and build up strength for a new chapter. As it would happen, 2015 presented near-perfect conditions and an effortless ripening period that would seem to belie the need for strength. Regardless, the vines had returned to full capacity. They were vital and healthy, and the growing season was mild, steady and quite perfect.
2015 was important in the life of Nine One Six; somewhat a milestone. There are two equally important reasons for this: First, this was the first year that we understood the extent of the variations in grape character throughout the property. The ideal ripening conditions, combined with a renewed health and vigour in the vines since the fires and drought conditions of the previous six years, allowed us to see the vineyard in a new light. From a winemaker’s point of view, it felt almost like walking through a new vineyard. The vines had healthy vigour, deep green leaves, even bunch distribution and an overall feeling of balance. There was an atmosphere of activity and vitality across the property, with natural growth on the vineyard floor and a general feeling of “wellness”. The ultimate result of this was the ability to see the subtle nuances in grapes character across the block with intense clarity. This was the beginning of understanding the exciting micro-climatic variations within the Nine One Six property. As a result, this was the first year we began to harvest some of these discrete areas separately, capturing four separate “personalities” of the property, later represented by four different parcels of Nine One Six Pinot Noir. These components taught us a lot about the property. They also formed the elements from which we blended the 2015 Nine One Six Pinot Noir.
Secondly, the exploration of style took a huge leap. In 2015, we decided to harvest the grapes on the earlier side of the ripening spectrum. The warmer and drier 2013 vintage showcased a darker and richer side of the vineyard, while 2012 revealed a gentle, delicate and slightly timid
personality as the Nine One Six debut. 2015, with its effortless balance of flavour and ideal phenolic maturity, presented the opportunity for us to harvest at peak expression of fruit and spice – and those fragrant herbs that define Nine One Six – entwined in to a structure that was tense and tightly knit. The preservation of high, bright natural acidity and its interaction with these complex tannins has given an energy and vibrancy to the wine that makes a statement of style. It has also informed a great deal for future vintages.
The 2015 interpretation of Nine One Six Pinot Noir fosters the notion of vintage expression, and vineyard expression; both of which are essential for longevity. This wine will have a bright future, and paints a picture of the Nine One Six provenance in one of the great Yarra Valley vintages.
